Open position: Postdoctoral researcher in digital media

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN DIGITAL MEDIA
To be appointed on a full-time basis for 22 months from 1 September 2021 onwards (or starting point as agreed).
The successful applicant will join a research team of the project Media platforms and social accountability: Dynamics, practices and discourses funded by the Academy of Finland.
Media platforms and social accountability: Dynamics, practices and discourses studies digital media platforms as crucial sites for social accountability processes and debates across global contexts. The project uses digital methods combined with qualitative approaches to examine the changing dynamics, practices and discourses of social accountability. The project produces new knowledge of the ways in which social media platforms intervene and influence accountability processes, both facilitating and threatening democratic participation. Further, it investigates how the accountability of platform companies is globally demanded and contested by governments and civil society actors, and how the platforms act to reclaim their legitimacy in response.
QUALIFICATIONS
An appointee to the position must hold a doctoral degree within media and communication studies or an adjacent field in the humanities, social sciences or data sciences. The default assumption is that the appointee will hold a doctoral degree before commencing work, and have the ability to conduct independent scientific work. The candidate is furthermore expected to demonstrate a background in one or more of the following fields: digital media studies, media policy research, media industry studies, global media studies, internet research. Previous experience in the collection and analysis of digital media data and digital methods is an asset. The successful applicant should also possess appropriate teaching skills in higher education. The duties of the postdoctoral researcher include teaching for the Faculty of Social Sciences (5% of the annual workload).
The chosen applicant is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki, and to participate actively in the intellectual life of the discipline of Media and Communication Studies and the wider scientific community across and beyond the Faculty of Social Sciences and the University of Helsinki. The Faculty of Social Sciences provides assistance in relocation. The working language will be English.

The annual gross salary range will be approx. 41,000 – 50,000 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
